Sod can go down in many months of the year. But some weeks are easier on new grass than others. Here is how we think about timing for lawns in Atlantic County, and how to plan around a busy summer.
The short version
Early fall is the best time to lay sod in Atlantic County. September through mid October gives new sod warm soil and cool air, the best mix for fast rooting. Late spring is second best, from late April through early June. Summer installs work too, but they need more water and more attention.
Why early fall wins
In September the ground is still warm from summer. Warm soil helps roots grow quickly. At the same time, the air is cooler, so the grass loses less water through its blades. That means less watering for you and less stress on the lawn.
Weeds are also slowing down by fall. A new lawn has less to compete with while it settles in. And fall rain often helps keep the soil damp.
A lawn laid in early fall has weeks of good rooting weather before winter. By the time spring comes, it is ready to green up and grow.
Spring is a solid backup
Late April through early June is the next best window. The soil is warming up, the grass is waking up, and there is a full growing season ahead.
The catch with spring is summer. A lawn laid in May has only a few weeks before the heat arrives. On sandy ground, that means you need to stay on top of watering when July comes.
Can you lay sod in summer?
Yes. We lay sod in summer, and it roots fine when it gets enough water. On Atlantic County sand, summer heat dries the surface fast. Expect to water more often in the first two weeks.
This is one more reason lawns over about 1,500 square feet go in with a sprinkler system. A hose cannot keep up with a big lawn on a hot afternoon. You can see what a system costs on our sprinkler system cost page.
Late fall and winter
Sod can still go down after mid October, as long as the ground is not frozen. It roots more slowly as the weather cools. A very late lawn may rest over the winter and finish rooting in spring. That is fine. It just means you will see the full result a bit later.
We suggest mid October as the target if you want the strongest start.
Planning around the season
Atlantic County gets busy in summer. Island towns like Brigantine, Ventnor, Margate and Longport fill up with visitors, and many homes are rentals. Some owners like to lay sod before Memorial Day so the yard looks good for the season. Others wait until after Labor Day, when the streets are quieter and the weather is better for grass.
Inland, in towns like Hammonton, Galloway and Egg Harbor Township, the summer rush matters less. There the main question is simply soil and water.
Either way, fall dates fill up. If you want a September install, it helps to get your quote in summer.
How install day works in any season
The timing changes, but the job does not. On install day we:
- Tear out the old lawn and weeds.
- Loosen and grade the ground.
- Spread composted topsoil aged 12 months, plus lime and starter fertilizer.
- Lay our tall fescue blend, grown nine months on our farm in Tabernacle and cut that morning.
- Press it down with a 300 lb roller.
Most lawns are done in a day. Then the 30 days of aftercare begin. We come back for the first cut and the second feeding, and we replace any piece that fails to root.
Watering by season
In the first two weeks, keep the soil under the sod damp. In fall that may be a couple of short runs a day. In summer it may be more. After two weeks, switch to fewer, longer soaks. Always water in the early morning. You do the watering, and we give you a written plan that fits your yard and the time of year.
Getting on the schedule
Our standard rate is $2.85 per square foot for an average yard, with a $2,000 minimum. A 30% deposit holds your date. Send your address on our quote page to get a written price and see which dates are open.
